The way people dress has always been a reliable indicator of social movements in any historical situation: a reaction to the political atmosphere, economic prosperity or depression; a reflection of the cultural and artistic currents of the given period, as well as the position of women in the society; a sign of the lifestyle of the time and the state of of hygiene and medical science. Subject to world fashion trends, the way people dress has equally been shaped by the impulses of local conditions. This volume presents Czech fashion production in the period 1870-1918 in a number of aspects that were crucial and influential to its history. The author studies the society in Bohemia and its relevant social events. She deals with women's emancipatory efforts as well as the efforts to reform the contemporary apparel; the etiquette in clothing; the structure of fashion production and the establishment of new tailors' workshops; the development of the ready-made clothing manufacturing. The author also reviews the fashion magazines published in the Czech lands at the time and describes in detail the development of the fashion sense in Bohemia - from its influences of historical styles, through individual phases of Art Nouveau, to the efforts to create a typical Czech apparel influenced by the national folk costume. This thoroughly researched book is based on studies of historical sources, fashion magazines, portraits, photographs, and the clothing collection of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. -- Contents: The Society; Position of Women; Dressing Etiquette; Struggle to Reform; Production and Trade; Fashion Magazines; Czech Woman and Fashion; Change in Fashion Lines Between 1870 and 1914; Fashion Between 1870 and 1876; Fashion Between 1877 and 1881; Fashion Between 1882 and 1888; Fashion Between 1889 and 1899; Fashion Between 1900 and 1906; Fashion Between 1907 and 1914; Fashion Between 1915 and 1918; Men's Fashion
